The French equivilant of the has two basic forms: le and la.

le garçon - the boy                                         la fille - the girl
le copain - the friend (male)                          la copine - the friend (female)

Note: Both le and la become l' before a vowel sound

un ami     →  l’ami                                                          une amie  →  l’amie

Practice the sound /_ / in the following words. Note that this vowel sound can have several different spellings.

→  Be sure not to pronounce an “n” or “m” after the nasal vowel.
